Suke is doing much better.
The mixed-breed dog taken in by McComb Animal Shelter after suffering severe head trauma in February is now approaching availability for adoption.
“We’re starting pretreatment for heartworms, because she is heartworm-positive, and we’re going to get her spayed,” said shelter manager Courtney Holder on Tuesday. “Then, she’ll be ready to go.”
Animal control officer Shannon Regan picked up Suke after a homeowner called in fear because of the swollen-headed appearance Suke presented.
The veterinarian that works with the animal shelter speculated that the swelling was caused by blunt force trauma.
It also appeared that Suke might have given birth a few weeks beforehand. No puppies were found nearby, however.
Before anything else could be done, Suke had to have incisions to drain the swelling. Then, her skull was visible under the bandaging from her snout to forehead and beyond.
Now, “she’s doing wonderful,” Holder said. “The sutures have been removed, and her hair has grown back. She’s healed so you can hardly tell anything happened to her. She’s able to run and play, and she’s not restricted by bandages.
“She’s doing great.”
