The Martin Luther King Center gym ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held in the near future, McComb Mayor Quordiniah Lockley said Tuesday.
The gym will be a multipurpose facility with bright LED lights and capable of hosting basketball and volleyball games. There will be retractable bleachers, locker rooms with showers, restrooms and a concession stand.
Lockley said he, Recreation Director Joyce Smith and Ward 5 Selectman Bruce Mullins recently walked through the facility on Martin Luther King Drive.
“Hopefully, in the near future, (City Administrator David Myers) will schedule the ribbon-cutting and we’ll be ready to go,” Lockley said.
“What’s the first event scheduled?” Selectman Matt Codding asked, asking if there is anything other than the ribbon cutting planned. “Do we need like a selectman vs. police department basketball game or something?”
“No,” Selectman Tommy McKenzie said as the everyone around the table laughed.
The board unanimously approved a $94,003 invoice from Mitcho Construction Inc. out of Hattiesburg and a $354 invoice for M3A Architecture out of Jackson.
“This will come out of the ARPA fund money that’s been allocated for the gym,” Lockley said.
A total of $200,000 of American Rescue Plan Act funds have been allocated for the completion of the gym.
