McComb officials hope to advertise for bids next month to repair a large sinkhole near a school and fix a manhole that’s being infiltrated by water and sewage near Baertown.
The projects are being funded in part through a grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
One project will be to fix a sinkhole next to Higgins Middle School on Elmwood Street that formed several months ago. The other is for sewer and water infiltration issues that have gone on for a couple of years at a manhole on the corner of Presley Boulevard and McComb Street.
The Corps of Engineers will fund 75% of the projects and contribute up to $750,000. McComb will fund 25%.
Neel-Schaffer Engineering’s Garrett Smith said the Corps of Engineers approved the draft plans for the projects. He said the draft will be reviewed and a final approval is expected to come Oct. 4, followed by a two-week period for open comments.
If there is no opposition, bidding will open Oct. 21.
“I’ve already reached out to several contractors to let them know about the projects,” Smith said.
“Good,” Mayor Quordiniah Lockley said. “We want as many people as possible who would like to bid or at least pick up the package to review the bid specs and, hopefully, bid on the package.”
The board approved five invoices from Neel-Schaffer at Tuesday’s meeting for the design of the project.
The invoices were $1,939 for November 2021, $7,087 for December 2021, $8,452 for January, $5,562 for February and $4,055 for March.
