The explosive device found inside a car in McComb on Friday night appeared to be homemade, Sheriff Wally Jones said.
Jones said deputies working in the city encountered a suspicious car driving slowly through a neighborhood without headlights after dark and attempted to stop the vehicle, which led officers on a brief chase.
The driver fled the still-running car at the intersection of 5th Street and Brine Avenue.
Jones said deputies discovered the device when they went to put the car in park.
“It had a fuse coming out of it. It was just a homemade IED,” the sheriff said.
One person, whose name was not released, was taken into custody, Jones said.
Sheriff’s officials called in a bomb squad from the state’s Office of Homeland Security, which took the device to destroy it.
