Alderman Melvin Harris defeated fellow Alderman George “Lucky” Chaplain in a runoff Tuesday to win the mayor’s seat in Magnolia at least temporarily.
Harris received 328 (54 percent) of the total 612 votes cast and will complete the unfinished term of former Mayor Jim Storer, and become the city’s first black mayor.
