Child abuse and neglect is a major problem in Mississippi.
The state’s Child Protective Services department receives more than 30,000 reports of suspected child abuse or neglect each year. Last year’s tally was more than 33,000.
As of January, CPS had 3,650 children in custody and another 4,000 being monitored.
