Crate after crate, almost 160 local dogs boarded a flight to their new home in the Garden State.

Because of shelter overcrowding, adoptable dogs and cats are at risk of being euthanized nationwide.

The event featured speeches from Brookhaven police chief Kenny Collins, McComb city administrator Kelvin Butler and the Rev. D.C. Corson of First Pentecostal of McComb.

Travis Payne, 9, and his sister Harley, 5, of Tylertown, have been attending Camp Kandu since Travis’ diagnosis in 2015 and look forward to it like they’re going on vacation to Disneyland, their mother Ashley Payne said.
