Sheriff: Inmate move all about funding

Walthall County Sheriff Duane Dillon said his decision to house county inmates out of town is based on economics.

The sheriff moved the county’s six inmates to the Marion-Walthall Correctional Facility in Columbia on Monday because he said it wasn’t cost-effective to house them in the county jail.

Sheriff: Too few inmates to justify using new jail full time

TYLERTOWN — There are no inmates in Walthall County’s 2-year-old, $2.7 million, 68-bed jail today, not because of a shortage of crime but a shortage of criminals.

Sheriff Duane Dillon on Monday ordered to close the county jail on weekdaysduring daytime hours. The jail would be open on weekends, officials said.
