TYLERTOWN — The South Pike Eagles fell to 1-1 on Friday night following a 27-12 loss to Tylertown.
The Chiefs improved to 1-1 with the victory.
South Pike running back Jaxavian Holmes had 182 yards rushing in last week’s season-opening win against Jefferson County. Friday, Holmes continued running hard, but had six carries for 65 yards and a touchdown against Tylertown.
The Chiefs had 371 yards of total offense to the Eagles’ 206.
Tylertown had 15 first downs to only four for South Pike. The Eagles hurt their cause with two lost fumbles and an interception that was returned for a touchdown. Tylertown turned the ball over once on a fumble.
“I felt like we had too many turnovers,” South Pike head coach Michael Andrews said. “We gave Tylertown a short field three times. I feel like they scored 28 points on turnovers, and you can’t do that against a good team like Tylertown and expect to win. I believe those turnovers were the difference in the game.”
Both teams had several penalties. South Pike had 8 penalties for 47 yards, while the Chiefs had 8 for 80 yards.
South Pike quarterback, QuaVonte Adams completed 4-of-13 passing attempts for 116 yards. He had one interception and threw for a touchdown.
Adams carried the ball seven times for 8 yards. Running back Mark Varnado had seven carries for 3 yards. Jamey McCray carried the football once time for 3 yards, while Darreal Cook had five carries for 7 yards. John Jones had two carries for 10 yards.
Receiving, Cook had there catches for 54 yards. Desmond Cook hauled in one pass for 10 yards and LaPatrick Nimox had one reception for 26 yards. He was on the receiving end of the touchdown pass.
South Pike travels across the state line Friday to Hammond, La., for a Mississippi-Louisiana showdown. The game will mark Hammond’s season opener.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
