South Pike Head Coach Michael Andrews told the Enterprise-Journal Tuesday that starting quarterback Quavonte Adams will miss the remainder of the season as he recovers from a concussion suffered against Columbia last Friday.
Adams was hit by a Columbia defender following a pass in the second half of a 44-24 loss. The sophomore quarterback was slow to leave the field, and according to Andrews looked woozy as he approached the sidelines.
After being checked by the team’s sports medicine staff, Adams was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a moderate-to-mild concussion.
Senior Darreal Cook will move from wide receiver to quarterback for the final three weeks of the regular season. The Eagles, 1-6 on the season and 0-2 in district play, will likely need to win all of their remaining games to have a chance at qualifying for the playoffs.
“Unfortunately we lost our quarterback for the rest of the season,” Andrews said. “But Cook has mobility and throwing ability. He did a fairly good job against Columbia (after Adams left the game). We are working with him this week.”
South Pike’s next game is Friday at home against Lawrence County.
