Approximately 25 McComb High School softball alumni showed up Saturday for the first-ever best-of-three alumni games at Sammy Clark Field.
The older alumni showed their talent had not wavered through the years as they won both games against younger alumni. The older alumni won the opener 3-1. They won the second game 8-7 thanks to a rally in the bottom of the seventh. Anissa Butler’s fly to center field drove in two runs and proved to be the game-winner.
The former players described Saturday’s opportunity to play on a field solely designed for softball as a field of dreams.
“This is definitely the older players’ field of dreams,” Butler said. “We never had a home field when I was playing. We had to go from Higgins to even the Dixie Youth fields in Summit and play. This field is really something. We would have loved to have had the opportunity to play here.”
Butler graduated from McComb in 1995. She was the first softball signee at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
The alumni games were put together by Flo Wansley and McComb softball coach Cody Hall. Wansley graduated in 1997.
“I am really excited about the turnout today,” Wansley said. “Facebook was huge for us being able to get out the word about today. I was able to reach out to some of the younger (players) and it just all came together. It has been a success. We are looking forward to this every year.”
Kamry Creel and Bre’Ann Talbert were two most recent McComb graduates. The oldest alumni representative was Comesha Tucker, who graduated in 1993.
Proceeds benefitted the McComb softball program.
