Despite losing to their National League counterparts in the South sub-district tournament, the McComb American League All-Stars will take part in the state tournament in Mendenhall beginning July 18.
McComb earned its second bid after a slew of Natchez players committed to a travel team tournament the same weekend, rendering the team ineligible for the tournament. Natchez and the McComb NL All-Stars, the South sub-district champs, are still playing a best-of-three district championship series this weekend, which McComb leads 1-0 after a 17-3 victory in Game 1 Friday night.
In other Dixie Youth Baseball action, the McComb 11-year-old NL All-Stars began their state tournament run Friday night with a 13-2 victory over Cleveland West.
McComb took an early 4-0 lead and extended its lead to 8-2 through three innings before a five-run fourth put the game out of reach.
Josh Henderson and Poo Martin Felder combined to allow just two hits from the mound, while McComb recorded 16 of its own.
Henderson registered three base hits to lead the team. JP Johnson, Canden Grantham, Andrew Durr and Reid Smith also had multi-hit games for McComb. Of the team’s 12 members, 10 recorded a hit against Cleveland.
McComb’s 9-year-old AL All-Stars exloded for 24 runs in a 24-16 win over Magee to begin state tournament play Friday night. The team trailed Columbia 11-10 Saturday before a rain delay halted the action.
