The Fernwood Flippers dove into a new summer season Monday with a win over the Briarwood Dolphins in their first swim meet of 2014. The Fernwood girls won their meet 260-200, while the boys won their meet 325-267. Of the 64 different events at the meet, the Flippers won 41 of them.
The Flippers practice every day and compete once a week against other swim clubs from around the state. This year, the Flippers feature 58 swimmers, 41 of which competed in Monday’s meet.
Swimmers are separated at meets by gender and age group to ensure the best competitive balance. Each race, be it individual racers or a team relay, focuses on one of four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly), with the exception of the individual medley relay — a relay featuring all four strokes in one race.
