McComb’s 7- and 8-year-old American and National League All-Stars are off to a hot start in the Dixie Youth Baseball playoffs, as none of the four teams had lost a game entering Saturday night’s action.
The McComb 7-year-old American League All-Stars began the postseason with a bang at the District 6 tournament in Natchez. McComb beat the Brookhaven National League All-Stars 24-0 in its opening game, and returned to the field Saturday morning to defeat the Walthall County All-Stars 18-8.
“We came as a group, everybody was hitting, everybody was contributing,” Coach Josh Melton said of his A.L. All-Stars.
The National League All-Stars, headed by Blake Brewer, registered a pair of even more resounding victories, topping Natchez 27-3 on Friday before topping Copiah 47-3 on Saturday.
Brewer, like Melton, said there were no individuals worthy of being mentioned above the rest of the team, noting his team batted through the order four times in the first inning alone in its game against Copiah.
The National League All-Stars include Gage Beard, Henry Brewer, James David Dumas, James Max Fenn, George Glass, John “Camp” Lott, Noah Magee, Charles “Kaden” Morris, Jamarcus Pittman, Bruner Rushing, Collin Smith and Joe Walker Whittington.
The two McComb squads faced off in the winner’s bracket of the tournament Saturday night, but the game finished too late for this publication.
McComb’s 8-year-old National League All-Stars edged out an 18-13 victory over the Walthall County All-Stars in the opening round of the District 6 South sub-district tournament at Edgewood Park.
Head coach Keith Reeves praised his team’s offense, citing of his 12 kids 11 had a hit and eight had multiple hits.
Latrell Luckett went 3-for-3 at the plate with an inside-the-park home run, a triple and a single, and Cameron Jones went 3-for-4 with two triples and a single. Blaine Reeves was 3-for-4 with a double and two singles.
JT Paulk had a two RBI base hit in the first inning to ignite the offense. Brewer Carruth registered a triple and a single, and JR Lott had a triple and a double.
Reeves also praised outfielder Karmelo Nobles and third baseman John Michael Lampton for their efforts in the field; Nobles ended the game by throwing out a runner at third base from the outfield.
The American League All-Stars, under the direction of head coach Keith Hughes, defeated the Pine Hills All-Stars Friday night in the other opening round game.
Because both of McComb’s All-Star squads won in the opening round Friday, they squared off in a winner’s bracket game Saturday night at Edgewood Park with the winner earning a spot in Monday’s championship game. The game ended too late for publication but will be featured in Monday’s Enterprise-Journal.
