NATCHEZ — The Centreville Academy Tigers improved to 2-1 overall on the season Friday following a 34-12 victory on the road over Adams County Christian School.
ACCS dropped to 2-1 overall.
Centreville Academy assistant football coach Brian Stutzman said making big plays at crucial times in the game helped seal the win for the Tigers.
“We came out with a lot of intensity last night,” Stutzman said. “Our offense played well and we were able to keep the game flowing.”
Following a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter by Brock Andrus, the Tigers scored 21 unanswered points to take a 24-0 lead at halftime.
Adams Christian scored two touchdowns late in the game.
In the second quarter, Centreville quarterback Casey Haygood got things rolling with touchdown passes of 29 yards to Mark Curry and a 35-yard pass to Tyler Caston. Also, J.M. McDowell had an 80-yard punt return for a score.
Andrus was good on all three PATs in the first half.
Centreville’s scores in the second half came on a 21-yard field goal from Andrus and a 4-yard touchdown run by Ian Ball. Ball scored on the first play following his 91-yard run that set up the score.
ACCS did not score until 2:27 left in the fourth quarter. The Rebels scored on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Carlos Woods to Parker Rymer and a 15-yard reception by Lester Wells from Tyler Stockstill.
Offensively, Haygood completed 14 of 21 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 39 yards on seven carries. Shaw had five catches for 86 yards, and Caston had four receptions for 91 yards.
Ball carried the football four times for 96 yards.
For Adams Christian, Stockstill was 6-for-13 passing with a touchdown. Stockstill rushed six times for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Trey Flemming had four receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Shaw led Centreville with 10 tackles and Ball had nine.
“Defensively we played very aggressively,”Stutzman said. “We blew to the ball all night. We definitely played much better tonight on both sides of the ball than last week. Our effort was much better.”
Stutzman said special team play also was outstanding.
“Special teams did a great job,” Stutzman said. “It’s something we can build on for next week against Parklane.”
Parklane defeated Silliman Institute 28-21 Friday night at Parklane and improved to 2-1 overall on the season.
“We are going to have to play a good game next week to beat Parklane,” Stutzman said. “They are physical and very strong. They have a well balanced offense. One thing that we have to do is hold on to the football and not turn it over.”
Kickoff at Cowart-Smith Stadium/Charlie Newlon field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
CHEF 28, ASC 22
In Liberty Friday night, Amite School Center was a 28-22 loser to Christian Home Educators Fellowship (CHEF) of Baton Rouge.
CHEF dampened homecoming festivities for Amite School Center with the victory.
The Rebels dropped to 1-2 overall on the season.
ASC head football coach Ray Olive said even with the loss, he saw his team take steps at getting better.
“We showed improvement from last week to this week,” Olive said. “As a team, we made some adjustments at halftime and the kids responded. We just have to hold on to the football better.”
CHEF had 441 yards of total offense, while the Rebels managed 345 yards of offense.
All of CHEF’s scoring came in the first half on touchdown passes of 62, 67, 15 and 76 yards.
The Rebels’ first score of the game came in the first quarter on a 7-yard run by Josh Jackson.
In the second quarter, ASC quarterback Aaron McKay hit David Leyendecker on a 50-yard TD strike.
Steven Shelton connected on both PATs following the touchdowns.
McKay hit Leyendecker again in the third quarter on a 70-yard touchdown pass.
Leyendecker ran for the conversion.
“We have some things to clean up and we can do that,” Olive said. “We are a young team, but we grew up in the second half.”
On Friday, ASC visits Union Christian in Farmerville, La. Union Christian is 3-0 overall on the season. The Rebels fell to 1-2 overall.
