Southwest Miss Bass Club fished its sixth derby of the season at Lake Bruin in St. Joseph, La.
Lake Bruin is an oxbow of the Mississippi River in Tensas Parish, northeastern Louisiana.
The morning began with Jesse Mabry setting a weigh-in time of 3 p.m., and Joe Moree giving the invocation. Flights were called out by Wayne Foreman, and each flight consisted of five boats leaving out at a time.
Twenty-four teams (43 anglers) took to the 3,000-acre oxbow with hopes of bringing in the biggest bag. A spinnerbait was one of the top baits for a heavy bag and numbers.
Air temps were 55-75 degrees,water temp 66-68 degrees, water clarity stained to clear, and winds 5-10 mph southeast.
Bringing in the biggest bag of the day at 16.11 pounds and also winning big-bass payout with a 5.1-pound bass was father and son team Randy and Josh Simpson.
The Simpson team found their bass early, getting and surpassing a limit by 7:30 that morning. Josh reported that they found a nice area where the shad were spawning and the bass were feeding. They threw spinnerbaits, crankbaits and plastics and caught around 30 bass.
Second place turned out a nice bag also, with Auston Bruce taking lead on Team Bruce and using their alternate Buz Craft. Auston caught their biggest bass with a green pumpkin jig. They weighed in five bass at 12.11 pounds.
Third place was taken by Wayne Foreman with five fish weighing 11.13 pounds. And rounding out the payouts were Chris Toler and Brad Wooley with five fish weighing 11.12.
Others catching were Derrick and Scott Toler with five at 11.9, Johnny Rials and Shane Norton five at 10.10, Sawyer Wallace five at 10.9, Eli Fowler and Jeremy Stockton five at 10.3, Bruce Knippers and Kenneth Murphy five at 9.4.2, Artie Faucett and Chris Thompson five at 9.4, Joe and Elizabeth Moree five at 8.7, Michael and Coby Dunaway five at 7.15, Kell Thompson and Buddy Roberts five at 7.13, Jesse Mabry and alternate Tyler Wooley five at 7.3, Jason Dunaway three at 6.0, Tommy Cook and Gary Burris four at 4.15, Andrew Johnson and alternate Clay Baker three at 3.14, Bruce Taggert and Warren Kinchen two at 3.2, Darrell Parks and Terry Vining one at 2.8, Bobby Reynolds one at 2.3, and Pat and Eric Wilson one at 1.0.
Also fishing were Donald O’Brian, Duane Morgan and Stuart Middleton, and Caleb and Casey McCaffery.
