Residents may partake in some Christmas fun this weekend, while raising money for McComb Animal Shelter’s new facility fund.
The shelter-sponsored Christmas at the Depot will take place Saturday near the downtown McComb parking garage from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Admission to the event is free and will feature food, arts and crafts vendors, live music and plenty of fun for kids, said animal control officer Monique McCullough.
She said a craft table sponsored by Home Depot, face painting, petting zoo, rides and more will keep children busy.
“Parents can shop and we can entertain the kids,” she said.
Santa also will make an appearance from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children can meet the bearded fellow and parents can purchase photos with Santa.
“Santa pictures can be with kids or pets or kids and pets,” McCullough said.
The petting zoo, which was a popular attraction last year, is back again, McCullough said. She loves seeing kids who have never met a pony have the opportunity to pet one.
“It was really was a big hit,” she said. “All of them are very friendly and kid proof.”
All proceeds from the event will go toward the McComb Animal Shelter’s new building fund. Donation jars will be set up around the event, which is forecast to have perfect weather, McCullough said.
The McComb Animal Shelter is in dire need of a new facility. This event, along with other fundraising initiatives, will go toward building a new facility, allowing the shelter to help more animals, McCullough said.
“Space is always an issue,” she said. “Sometimes we want to go pick up animals on the street, but we have to figure out space before we can.”
Currently, the shelter is trying to clear up some room by transporting 23 dogs to no-kill shelters in New York and Washington, D.C.
McComb Animal Shelter needs about $1,000 for fuel costs to make the transport possible.
A donation jar is located at Rustic Charm in Summit. Checks can be made out to the Aiding Shelter Animals Project (ASAP) and dropped off at the shelter.
