The Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a three-vehicle accident that involved a school bus full of children Monday in Amite County.
The wreck resulted in two injuries, and none of the 54 children occupying the bus was injured, officials said.
State troopers responded about 3:36 p.m. to the intersection of Highway 24 and Plymouth Church Road between Liberty and Gloster, MHP spokesman Sgt. 1st Class Rusty Boyd said.
Boyd said an Amite County School District 2009 Freightliner school bus, driven by 59-year-old Edward J. Selman of Gloster, was stopped and yielding to oncoming traffic in an attempt to make a left turn onto Plymouth Church Road.
Meanwhile, 61-year-old Melvin J. Montgomery of Tylertown was traveling east on Highway24 in his 2008 Dodge pickup when he collided with a 1990 Dodge pickup that was trying to cross the highway from Plymouth Church Road onto Hinton Road.
The driver of the 1990 Dodge pickup, driven by 63-year-old Billy G. Coleman of Gloster, failed to yield to Montgomery’s pickup, Boyd said.
He said the front of Montgomery’s pickup struck the driver’s side of Coleman’s vehicle, causing Coleman to collide with the driver’s side of the stopped school bus.
Selman and the 54 children occupying the bus were transferred to another bus and taken to Field Memorial Community Hospital in Centreville as a precaution.
No one on the bus suffered injuries as a result of the accident.
EMT units transported Montgomery via ambulance to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
Coleman reportedly suffered minor injuries but refused treatment.
Boyd said each of the drivers was wearing a seat belt.
