The math is done on a pay raise for teachers assistants in the North Pike School District.
Now board members will have to decide whether to award a raise, and how much.
District business manager Tina Griffin told board members at the May 3 meeting that a raise of 25 cents per hour would cost the district about $15,000; 50 cents, about $30,000.
“I’d like to at least give 25 cents, and may we could do more at a later date,” board member Scott Campbell said.
Superintendent Dennis Penton said holding off before granting much of a raise might be prudent.
“I believe we’ll get a new funding formula (from the state) next year, and it may have new pay levels in it,” Penton said.
Base salaries for teachers and assistants are set by the Legislature.
Lawmakers have struggled the past couple of years to replace the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, which now governs much of the state’s education spending, though it has rarely been fully funded.
Budget deliberations are underway in public school districts, whose fiscal years will start over on July 1.
