Authorities charged a Bogue Chitto man with murder after he allegedly gunned down another man outside a Brookhaven night club on Friday.
Police responded to a report of a shooting at about 5:37 p.m. at Brother Jay’s night club, located on North Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Upon arrival, officers found 59-year-old John Lee Porter, 2237 London Drive, Bogue Chitto, suffering from a gunshot wound to the body, Detective Clint Earls said.
“He was suffering from at least one gunshot wound, maybe more,” Earls said. “We’re not exactly sure at this time.”
While on the scene, officers arrested 63-year-old Clyde Smith, 521 Bamboo Trail, Bogue Chitto, and booked him on an initial charge of aggravated assault.
EMT units transported Porter by ambulance to King’s Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven.
Porter was then airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he died that evening from his injuries.
That prompted police to upgrade Smith’s charge to murder, Earls said.
The motive behind the shooting appears to be the result of an altercation that quickly escalated, Earls said.
Witnesses reportedly told police the altercation began with a verbal disagreement inside the night club.
The pair then moved into the parking lot where the shooting took place.
Earls would not say what the altercation was about or what kind of gun was used in the shooting.
Smith was released from the Lincoln County jail after posting bond in the amount of $100,000.
