A Lincoln County sheriff’s deputy was injured when a shot was fired into the driver’s side of his unmarked squad car in Brookhaven Friday night.
Deputy Bryan Catchings was driving on Union Street in Brookhaven around 8 p.m. when he heard something hit his car, Sheriff Steve Rushing said.
“At first he didn’t realize he had been shot,” the sheriff said.
Rushing said Catchings’ back began aching and he realized he had been struck on the left side of his body. Lawmen believe the bullet was from a .38 revolver.
Rushing said it appears there was an altercation at the house of Mario Black, 28. Black allegedly fired the shot that hit Catchings, who was not responding to any certain call.
Catchings was able to drive a short distance to an Advanced Auto Parts store and call for help. He was taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he was held overnight and released Saturday morning.
Black faces charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, firing into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held in the Copiah County jail with no bond set, Rushing said. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case.
