McComb resident Lynn Gilmore took the oath of office on Tuesday to become the newest member of the McComb school board.
Superintendent Therese Palmertree administered the oath to Gilmore, who used a Bible held by her husband Warren Ellis Gilmore, during the ceremony.
Gilmore replaces Bettye Nunnery on the board.
“My goal is making sound, wise decisions for the children of our district,” Gilmore said.
After the installation of office, school safety liaison officer Greg Gilmore reported that a long-planned and surprise drug sweep of McComb High School, Denman Junior High School, the high school gymnasium, restrooms and the Business & Technology Complex was conducted on Tuesday.
With the use of drug-sniffing dogs, Gilmore said all campuses were free of drugs. Students were not searched, but dogs sniffed around student backpacks in classrooms. Gilmore said fewer than five people knew about the drug search, and he and Palmertree said they were very pleased that no drugs were found on campus.
“This says a lot about the safety of the school district,” Gilmore said. “The dogs didn’t find anything close to drugs, and no one knew about the search. We wanted to catch everybody off-guard.”
