Got an itch to tickle your funny bone? The Pike County Little Theater may be able to help.
The theater group will form a local comedy troupe and host an introductory improvisational workshop at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The idea began with Rhonda Dunaway of Summit.
“I had wanted to write for actors at the little theater, and I began looking at local improv groups. It’s something I think we can do to help reinforce arts and culture for Pike County,” Dunaway said.
And everybody these days could use a laugh.
Dunaway hopes interest is high enough that the PCLT can produce a “Comedy Night” of sketches — a combination of skits with props and costumes, along with improvisation.
Sunday’s workshop will bring interested people together “to develop chemistry with one another.”
“For a very long time, I’ve wanted to write for actors. I had to take advantage of the little theater to do that,” said Dunaway, secretary of the PCLT executive board.
“I’m newly involved, and I’m looking forward to helping out on their productions,” she said.
Dunaway has a degree in psychology, and she studied English. “I’ve never stopped writing; that’s an impulse.”
“I’ve gotten calls, and been recruiting. People are definitely interested,” she said. “I had a small walk-on part in the comedy ‘All Because of Agatha,’ and I’ve had people come to me and say, ‘Y’all should do more like that.’
“At the workshop, we’ll go in and play acting games; it’s pretend for big people … nothing real serious. Sunday is mostly to gather information and see who’s interested.”
Dunaway said improv groups not only are fun, they’re also therapeutic.
“I’ve been collecting comedy sketch ideas and joke ideas for years,” she said. “I’ve always had a vision to get a group together. The whole impetus for getting involved was because I wanted to write for the little theater. I saw that there were talented people involved with PCLT. For them to be able to pull things together is miraculous. … Somehow, it all comes together in the end.”
Dunaway invites anyone who is interested in comedy to attend the meeting at the PCLT building, 206 State St., in McComb.
