Burglars struck a newly developing apartment complex in Burglund this week, stealing nearly every appliance in the building.
McComb police officers responded around 10 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a burglary from Kiln resident Robert Necaise, a subcontractor for the construction firm AFC Inc. The firm is building a new apartment complex at 1007 Elmwood St.
Detective Deska Varnado said someone broke into one of the units and took more than $10,000 worth of appliances.
“They kicked in the door and went into one of the apartments where they were storing all of the appliances for the whole building,” he said.
The stolen items included four GE front-load washing machines worth $1,200 each, four GE front-load dryers also valued at $1,200 each, a GE dishwasher valued at $300, a GE refrigerator worth $400, a GE range stove worth $400 and a Masonite interior door valued at $250.
The theft reportedly occurred sometime between 5 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Wednesday when the construction workers were gone.
“They had to have a crew and plenty of time,” Varnado said of the burglars. “Someone had to see them.”
He said it appeared the burglars actually used Necaise’s dolly to carry out the appliances.
Detective Shannon Sullivan also said he believes there were witnesses to the crime.
“This area is lit by streetlights. There shouldn’t be any reason why someone didn’t report seeing anything,” Sullivan said. “That’s their first step to taking their community back and deterring crime. They need to step up and assist law enforcement.”
