Those gearing up for hunting season may have seen savings on their guns, ammo and archery equipment purchases over the weekend.
Friday kicked off the Second Amendment sales tax weekend that goes through today.
Maurice Williams, co-owner of Shooters Discount in Summit, said the business stayed busy from Friday morning and expects it to continue throughout the holiday.
“We’ve sold guns today as cheap as $200 up to the thousands,” he said.
“It’s a straight 7 percent tax, plus we’ve got a lot of guns on sale. We compete with others in the business so that’s how we try to get people to come in.”
One customer at Discount Shooters, who asked not to be identified, said she’s excited to start shopping because she knows she will find savings on a new firearm.
“We’ve been talking about buying me a new gun and we decided to do it this weekend because it’s tax-free,” she said.
An average gun can cost about $300 and a box of ammunition is around $40. With no sales tax, it could be viewed as if getting ammo free.
Cole Boyd, a customer at Southern Cash and Pawn in McComb said he was returning some ammunition for a CVA .35 Whelen rifle that he had bought earlier Friday.
“The only reason I bought the rifle is because it was tax- free,” he said.
Ed Sones, owner of the Sportsman One Stop in Summit, said Friday morning alone three employees had at least four to five customers waiting to be helped.
“We got run over this morning,” he said. “It amazes me the people who come out to not pay tax.”
