A woman who was reportedly walking in traffic on a four-lane highway died after at least one vehicle struck her Monday night.
Angela Hope Wooley, 41, of Monticello, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred on Highway 98 about two miles east of McComb at 8:33.
Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Craig James said Jer-Rel Mark, 30, of Tylertown, was driving a 2005 Cadillac Escalade that struck Wooley.
Jones said employees of a nearby Marathon convenience store told authorities that the woman had stopped by the business earlier.
He said the stretch of highway where the incident occurred “isn’t very well lit.”
“I know there were several witnesses on the scene that said she had been walking in the road and they had almost hit her,” Jones said. “It was very obvious she was walking in the roadway, in the lane of traffic.”
Jones said another vehicle may have been involved.
“It appears that she was walking in the eastbound lane and got struck by one vehicle. That vehicle stopped and a second vehicle struck her but did not stop,” Coroner Wally Jones said.
James wouldn’t confirm that, citing an ongoing investigation into the accident.
