McComb native Vasti Jackson, a Grammy-nominated blues guitarist, singer, songwriter and record producer, is returning to his hometown today ahead of a scheduled New Year’s Eve performance.
Jackson is headlining the New Year’s Eve celebration A Walk Down Main, with a performance at the Palace Theater.
Jackson will take a walk down Main Street from 11:15 to 11:30 a.m. today, visiting places that are taking part in the New Year’s Eve celebration — 207 Bistro & Blues, the Palace Theater and the Bo Diddley Pavilion. He’ll also have his photo taken in front of his statue on Georgia Avenue. Then he’ll visit attend the McComb High School band class at 2:30 p.m. and attend a band concert, also at the school, at 5:30 p.m.
On New Year’s Eve, A Walk Down Main, sponsored by the Pike School of Art-Mississippi, will begin with a meet-and-greet at 207 Bistro & Blues from 7 to 9 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres will be served and Collaboration will perform.
The party then moves to the Palace, where Jackson will take the stage at 9 p.m. Guests will receive a party favor and glass of champagne. Tickets are $20.
The city will sponsor a free celebration featuring Israel Coleman and DJ Swayway at the Bo Diddley Pavilion at 10 p.m., ending with a fireworks display at midnight.
McComb officials unanimously voted Tuesday to waive ordinances related to the sale of beer and light wine for the New Year’s Eve event.
“The reason why we are requesting this is because it is a celebration and it is a New Year’s celebration,” said Mayor Quordiniah Lockley. “And we don’t want our police officers arresting anyone who may come out and want to toast in the New Year.”
“We’re developing the program,” Lockley said. “If any of the board members would like to speak that night, please let me know. We will add your name to the program.”
