Summit officials said good bye to former Police Chief Kenny Cotton Friday, the first day of his retirement.
Officials held a reception in town hall for Cotton, who served as chief for about a decade in the town.
“I’m sure you’ll be around,” Mayor Percy Robinson said. “We really appreciate you for your 10 years. I know you had a break in there, but you came back. This is for you today.”
Cotton was first hired as police chief in 2009, replacing Lester Jones, who was the town’s last elected police chief. Cotton served in the position until 2016, when he was elected sheriff. He returned to Summit to continue serving as police chief after serving a term as sheriff.
The town council recently appointed longtime officer and former Liberty Police Chief Scott Reeves to serve as interim chief while they seek applicants.
“We’re going to miss you. We appreciate everything,” Councilman Joe Lewis said.
“I’m going to miss you,” Cotton said. “Don’t make me break down.”
