A Summit town councilman expressed gratitude to the police department Tuesday after officers recovered his wife’s stolen car.
Police Chief Alex Miller noted the theft when he gave his monthly report to the board during Tuesday’s work session,
“Over the Labor Day weekend we had another vehicle stolen from one of our residences in the Town of Summit,” he said. “That vehicle was recovered today. Again another team effort from McComb, Pike and Summit.”
Councilman Marcus Pittman said the stolen Honda Accord belonged to him.
“That was my vehicle that was stolen,” Pittman said, thanking Miller for his attention to the case. “Chief Miller came back at 4:00 that morning and he came back at 6:00. Today he was able to find it. Some juveniles had it.
I really appreciate you, man, for what you did. I really appreciate you.”
Miller said that’s just one instance of crime involving juveniles, which is rising.
“A firearm was retrieved from a juvenile,” he said, adding that the teen has a court date for the case and could be adjudicated as an adult since a gun was involved. “I appreciate Judge (David) Brewer for being so persistent with a lot of our burglaries in Summit.”
Miller said so-called hybrid gangs are making an appearance in Summit.
“Things are picking up. It’s not just Magnolia and McComb. Things are picking up with these hybrid gangs in Summit, too,” he said.
For August, officers worked more traffic accidents, wrote about the same number of citations as they did in July and responded to more calls of shots fired.
“We’re still dealing with a lot of car issues,” Miller said of break-ins.
