McComb’s old jail is worth $101,000, according to a recent appraisal of the building, whose tenant has made an offer for purchase.
City Administrator David Myers told selectmen of the appraisal of the facility, which includes two buildings, at the city board’s meeting Tuesday.
Pike School of Art-Mississippi rents the front building, and its representatives have said they want to purchase all of the property in order to secure grants to fix it up. The city stores records in the rear building. Appraisal South of McComb appraised both.
Myers said the board will hold further discussions about selling the old city jail, but the appraisal was for informational purposes.
“We’ve been talking about this for two months,” Selectman Tommy McKenzie said. “What are we doing when you say we’re going to go into discussion? Are we going to discuss it next week? Either we’re going to sell it to them or we’re not.”
Myers said the issue will be addressed in executive session at the Nov. 10 meeting.
Pike School of Art President Calvin Phelps was in the audience for the work session and asked for a copy of the appraisal.
“That would give you an advantage,” Myers said.
