State troopers will be in the spirit of giving seat belt citations, speeding tickets and sobriety tests as roads become busier with holiday travelers and New year’s revelers.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol’s stepped up enforcement efforts for the Christmas holiday begin 6 a.m. Friday and will conclude at midnight Monday and the New Year’s enforcement period begins and ends the same time a week later.
Troopers will focus on speeding and distracted and impaired driving laws, and they’ll set up safety checkpoints to monitor seatbelt usage and remove impaired drivers from roadways.
During the 2021 Christmas Travel Enforcement Period, MHP investigated 174 crashes with one fatality, made 146 DUI arrests, and issued 589 citations for occupant restraint violations on state and federal highway systems.
In the 2022 New Year’s Travel Enforcement Period, MHP investigated 178 crashes with two fatalities, made 279 DUI arrests, and issued 1,421 citations for occupant restraint violations on Mississippi roadways.
