McComb selectmen voted 3-2 Tuesday to dismiss Police Chief Garland Ward.
Selectmen Matt Codding, Tommy McKenzie and Bruce Mullins voted to remove Ward, who had been chief for two years. Selectmen Tabitha Felder Isaac and Terri Waterman-Baylor opposed. The sixth seat on the board is vacant.
At Tuesday's meeting, the board began discussing the police department's not having enough guns when Mullins suggested going into executive session. Mullins was the only selectman to vote against reappointing Ward to the job when the new city board took office in July.
Mayor Quordiniah Lockley said Deputy Chief Delre Smith is now in charge of the department.
Ward declined to comment.
