Brookhaven’s youth curfew will go into effect at the beginning of 2023, but McComb Mayor Quordiniah Lockley does not believe that is the solution to juvenile crime for the community.
Brookhaven aldermen passed an ordinance in September requiring children to be indoors 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and by midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
The curfew stays in effect through 5:30 a.m. each day.
There are exceptions, including if minor is with a parent; under adult supervision with parental permission; traveling to or from a school, church or organized sports activity; or traveling for work.
A McComb resident questioned why the city did not have a curfew for minors after learning Brookhaven would be implementing one.
Brookhaven put the curfew in effect after officials said minors were gathering at various places throughout the city and causing disturbances.
“There’s always been a comparison as far as I know about McComb and Brookhaven and there are people that think Brookhaven is better than McComb, but I disagree with that totally,” Lockley said. “McComb has much more going for it than Brookhaven. That may be biased because I’m the mayor.”
