McComb officials are enlisting the public’s help in tracking down a water main break that occurred Wednesday afternoon in the wake of this week’s hard freeze, and a boil-water notice has been issued as a result.
“We’re looking for water rolling down the streets,” Mayor Quordiniah Lockley said. “It’s got to be a big break.”
Lockley said he was notified of a drop in water pressure to the system around 3:30 p.m., and a water main break is the likely cause.
Warming temperatures have water moving through pipes and potentially sending ice through plumbing, leading to breaks in water lines.
A boil-water notice usually follows a loss in water pressure, which can allow contaminants to seep into the system.
Lockley said city workers were manually pumping water into the system in an effort to avoid a boil-water notice, but the pressure "dropped below that level."
Lockley asked anyone who sees the signs of a water break, such as water running down the street or into a ditch, to call public works at 601-684-3497.
