A Jayess trucker died on a Louisiana highway early Monday morning after his rig struck another vehicle head-on, went off the road and caught fire, authorities said.
Lavon Givens, 61, was southbound on Highway 25 in his 1998 Peterbilt 379 and struck a northbound 2019 Jeep Renegade in the northbound lane, according to Louisiana State Police spokesman Trooper William Huggins.
The accident occurred near the intersection of Highway 438, about a mile south of the state line in Washington Parish just after 2:45 a.m., Huggins said.
Givens died at the scene, and the other driver, who has not been identified, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, Huggins said.
It’s unclear whether either driver was wearing a seatbelt, Huggins said.
Routine toxicology tests are pending, he said.
