A Jayess woman who had been teaching in South Korea died after an apparent fall from the balcony of her apartment last week. Her death has led to a surge of viral speculation among internet sleuths.
Ashley Nicole Wainwright-King, the daughter of Roxane and Paul King of Jayess, reportedly died Aug. 30 after falling from a balcony of the building where she and her husband resided.
King moved to South Korea in 2016 to work for an English teaching organization called EPIK.
Since her death last week, concerns have surfaced among King’s family and friends as well as amateur “true crime” investigators on social media.
TikTok videos about King’s death on an account called true.crime.mama garnered hundreds of thousands of views and used King’s social media postings to compile a timeline of incidents that reportedly landed her in the hospital over a span of seven years — basically ever since she got to South Korea.
But most of those TikTok videos have been deleted, as has a video from King’s husband, Craig Wainwright, who posted a YouTube video shortly after her death entitled “An update on the situation with Ash.”
King’s Facebook and Instagram pages say she met and married Wainwright in 2017. He is from South Africa, also resided in Seoul and worked for the same organization as she did.
Wainwright posted a message on his now-deleted Facebook profile that said his wife was found outside their apartment with “severe trauma and no pulse.”
“I have tragic news,” he wrote. “My wife Ashley has passed away.”
Wainwright wrote that attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.
“Currently it looks like she fell out the window of our second story apartment while she was trying to beat our bath rug,” he wrote.
“I tried as hard as I could to love and protect her,” he wrote.
A GoFundMe page was set up to assist with her funeral services and memorial, but according to a post on her husband’s Facebook page, after an autopsy she was cremated Tuesday morning in South Korea.
King was North Pike High School’s valedictorian for the class of 2010.
No funeral arrangements have been announced.
