Summit Police Chief Kenny Cotton is retiring effective Dec. 1, town officials announced Tuesday.
Cotton’s pending departure from the department comes nearly two year after he began his second stint as Summit’s chief.
Cotton was first hired as chief in 2009 and held the position until 2016, when he was elected Pike County sheriff. Cotton lost his re-election bid in 2019.
“I want y’all to know this is the best job I have ever had in my entire life, and I have had some good jobs, but Summit has been the best,” he said.
Cotton, whose career has also included military service and working for the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, gave no indication that he would run for sheriff next year but said he was more focused on retirement.
“I’m looking forward to retirement, but I’ll be right here. If y’all ever need the help, no charge, I’m right here,” he said.
