McComb officials are planning a ribbon-cutting celebration for the new Martin Luther King Center gym at the end of the month.
City Administrator David Myers said Tuesday that he would like to have the event on the morning of Monday, Nov. 28.
Myers said Mitcho Construction Inc. of Hattiesburg presented invoices of $21,169 and $84,464 for the project.
“These two invoices will actually wrap up the payment for the MLK gym,” he said. The board is expected to approve the invoices at next Tuesday’s meeting.
Myers said the total cost for the gym will be $1,807,549, noting the city will have paid $1,689,299 to Mitchco and $118,250 to M3A Architecture of Jackson. He said $200,000 of the payments came from American Rescue Plan Act funds.
Myers said lockers are being installed in the gym this week.
“Based on that, the mayor’s already instructed me to look at scheduling a ribbon-cutting for the MLK gym,” Myers said.
Selectman Tommy McKenzie said he wanted to make sure everything was taken care of before the final payments were made to Mitchco.
“Has the architect given you the certificate of substantial completion and release of liens and all that?” McKenzie said.
“They did that,” Mayor Quordiniah Lockley said. “I don’t remember exactly when they did that, but we have it.”
McKenzie also wanted to make sure Mitchco paid all of its bills.
“I wouldn’t want any (subcontractors) filing liens on the property,” he said. “A lot of times they write the substantial completion with a punch list.”
Lockley said all subcontractors were paid.
Myers reiterated everything would be completed once the final two invoices were paid.
“These are the last two installments of the MLK gym,” he said. “That will zero out what we owe the contractors.”
