McComb officials were hoping to know as soon as Tuesday whether a boil-water notice that had been in effect for six days could finally be lifted.
City officials previously said Wednesday was the earliest the notice could expire because the city required two consecutive days of clean water samples in order for the Mississippi State Department of Health, which regulates water systems, to give the OK to lift the notice.
However, Mayor Quordiniah Lockley said he learned that was not the case after meeting with Public Works Director Eric Spurlock.
“Eric informed me that since we issued our own boil-water notice all we need is one good sample, so we’re waiting on the results,” Lockley said. “Hopefully if it’s good, we can lift it. The only time it’s two is when the health department requires you to have a boil-water notice.”
Lockley said he checked with state officials around 2 p.m. and the tests had not been completed and he was waiting to hear back from them.
The mayor said he would immediately announce the lifting of the notice as soon as he receives the all clear.
“I hope that even if it comes after or during the board meeting, we can notify the public and let them know that it has been lifted,” he said. “But that's what we’re doing is waiting on that sample.”
