The State Street (Not So) Junior Players’ production of the board game-turned murder mystery play “Clue” opens tonight.
The performance begins at 7 p.m. and continues through Saturday and again at 2 p.m. Sunday at the State Theater in McComb.
Clue is a murder mystery game that was devised in 1943 by British board game designer Anthony E. Pratt.
Director Katie Quin said the stage version of “Clue” is based on the movie that was based on the game where oddballs known as Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard race to find a killer in Boddy Manor before the body count stacks up.
“They all receive a letter inviting them to Boddy Manor for dinner, and once they get there, the owner of Boddy Manor ends up blackmailing them and wants them to kill his butler,” Quin said. “Things then take a turn for the worse when multiple people are killed. I’m sure most people know the story, but I don’t want to give away too much.”
Quin has 10 years experience as a director, directing performances at Pike County Little Theater and a theater in Hattiesburg. For her day job, Quin runs Natural Health food store on Jackson Avenue.
With 13 cast members in total, it can cost a pretty penny to purchase costumes, new stage pieces and props for every performance.
For this reason, Quin said she asked the cast to make or purchase their own costume for the performance, and the group re-uses props and stage pieces from previous performances.
“Unless it’s something wacky that they wouldn’t use again, then we would purchase it,” she said.
When the cast closes the curtain on “Clue,” auditions for another stage play will take place.
“Willy Wonka Jr.” will be our next performance in the summer for junior players,” Quin said. “Auditions are 9 a.m. to 11 on Saturday 29 at the Southwest Mississippi Community College student union auditorium.”
