Two people have been charged in connection with separate homicides in McComb, and officers are looking for those involved in gunfire that broke out in broad daylight Monday.
Police Chief Juan Cloy said FBI agents took Chauncey Dyson, age and address unavailable, into custody on murder charges Tuesday morning in Lancaster, Texas, in connection with the Nov. 19 slaying of Shawn Williams, 22.
Williams was shot to death on C.C. Bryant Street in Baertown, police said.
Dyson is expected to be extradited to Mississippi, but Cloy said he did not know when that would happen.
Police also arrested a man who allegedly shot and killed another man last week.
Cloy said James McKnight, 37, allegedly shot and killed Clint Allen, 41.
McKnight, who is charged with murder, remained in the Pike County Jail on Tuesday on $750,000 bond.
That shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. Friday on Nelson Street, Cloy said on Tuesday in what was the department’s first report on the fatality.
The chief did not elaborate on a possible motive into the shootings.
Two weeks ago, gunmen opened fire on a group of people in a convenience store parking lot after they had attended a post-funeral gathering for Williams at a nearby event center.
Five people were wounded in that incdient, which has produced no arrests.
Police released video showing gunfire coming from a black pickup truck as it passed by the store on Bendat Street, which was littered with shell casings.
Meanwhile, police are continuing their investigation into what Cloy described as a shootout that resulted in no injuries Monday afternoon in Burglund.
Cloy said the shooting took place in the “Old Projects,” and involved several individuals who were shooting at two people standing on the sidewalk and returned fire. The chief did not specify whether the people who started shooting were in a vehicle or on foot.
“We do not have the individuals who started the shooting in custody,” Cloy said. “However, we did arrest the two individuals who shot back but subsequently released them Monday evening. It was determined that they were engaged in self-defense.”
In addition to the shooting, police are investigating an attempted robbery at the Sonic Drive-In on Delaware Avenue last week.
Cloy said the incident took place around 7:20 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13.
“We believe it was one Black male subject who alluded to having a weapon, but none was displayed. No one was injured and the suspect made off on foot behind the Sonic,” Cloy said.
