A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter who killed one man and wounded another in Walthall County on Monday afternoon.
Walthall County sheriff’s officials said Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward.
Javon Carpenter, 23, of Starkville, was driving a side-by-side ATV on Sims Thornhill Road when someone shot him and Travis Williams, 25, just before 3 p.m., authorities said.
Carpenter was pronounced dead on arrival at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. Williams was hospitalized with injuries that Sheriff Kyle Breland said were not considered life-threatening.
Carpenter, who grew up in Walthall County and was living in Starkville, decided to return home Monday — the third anniversary of his grandfather’s death — to be with his family and participate in Tylertown’s Martin Luther King Day parade, said his mother, Tanya Holmes.
He was headed back to his grandmother’s house after the parade when the shooting occurred.
Breland said a witness who heard the shots saw a four-door navy blue sedan leave the scene of the shooting, which occurred just west of Highway 583.
