A McComb resident said an errant bullet fired Wednesday night in the area near Douglas Park narrowly missed him.
The resident said he doesn’t believe he was targeted in the shooting but asked not to be identified.
He said a bullet went through his bedroom window between 9 and 9:30.
“I was lying in bed,” he said. “I was getting ready to go to bed. All of the sudden I hear four or five gunshots go off. The last one pops in my bedroom window, goes through my house. I called the cops and they came on over there.”
He said it appeared the shooting came from south of his residence and there were two cars in the area where the shots were fired.
“I was in the crossfire,” he said. “It came in my bedroom window. I’m fine.”
He said he stayed on the ground until the vehicles sped away from the scene.
“I was terrified. I dropped to the ground, grabbed my phone and protected myself,” he said.
He called police, who did not find any suspects. McComb Police Chief Garland Ward said Thursday that he was aware that the shooting had been reported, but he had not seen an incident report on it.
“When they got there, there was nobody over there,” the resident said.
The resident has been staying with friends and relatives since the shooting, and now he plans on moving.
He said it was the first time he ever heard gunshots so close to the house.
“That’s the first thing that’s ever happened in that neighborhood,” he said.
He did not believe he as targeted in the shooting.
“I don’t think it was directed at me because of the amount of shots and only one hit my house,” he said. “I think it was just an altercation between two people and I was just caught in a crossfire.”
He encouraged people to protect their home and themselves.
“Be on your toes, I imagine,” he said. “Expect the unexpected.”
He said he hopes he’s nowhere near any shootings in the future.
“I’d love for this stuff to never happen again,” he said. “Nowhere is the kind of place for this type of stuff.
“People need to understand the value of life and the lives of these people. It’s terrible for the city.”
