A McComb man was shot and wounded after interrupting the theft of his car early Saturday morning, and the gunmen fled police when officers found them trying to steal another car minutes later.
Police Chief Juan Cloy said Kenny Chester, 75, was shot once in the arm at his house in the 800 block of Wall Street around 4 a.m. when he encountered two men trying to steal his Kia Soul.
Police found the men just blocks away in the 1000 Herrington Avenue, where they were trying to steal another Kia, Cloy said.
The pair fled on foot and eluded police.
Chester was treated for his wounds at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center and released.
Police have not been able to identify the suspects, Cloy said.
He reiterates his warning about the prevalence of thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles after viral videos showed that they could be started with USB cables.
“Certain Kia and Hyundai model vehicles from 2011 to 2020 are being targeted,” Cloy said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the McComb Police Department at (601) 684-3213.
