One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting early Friday morning at a Summit apartment complex.
Jeremiah Lloyd, 19, was shot along with a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old who survived what Police Chief Alex Miller described as a drive-by shooting.
The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. at 900 Cherry Street.
Miller said the gunfire grazed the 15-year-old and hit the 17-year-old.
Lloyd went by ambulance to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, where he later died, Miller said.
He said no motive has been established and no suspects have been identified.
“I’m just asking for any assistance,” Miller said, urging witnesses to come forward or anyone with information about the incident to call police. “Our hearts are going out to the family.”
Miller said the shootings involving young people are becoming too common in the area, even in Summit, whose typical small-town tranquility was rocked by a shooting that killed a police officer just over a month ago.
“They’re getting younger and younger. This is happening more around the surrounding area,” he said.
