Veterans to travel farther for care: Meadville VA clinic closing Nov. 1

The Veterans Administration’s outpatient clinic at Meadville will close Nov. 1, and southwest Mississippi veterans will have to go to VA clinics in either Natchez or Jackson for health care services afterwards.

Amite officials hope meeting curbs fights: School district tries to heal rift between feuding Gloster, Liberty students

Amite County school officials hope a meeting Saturday at Ethel Vance park will help improve discipline problems at Amite County High School.

The school was rocked by unrest and fights soon after the start of this school year, and an apparent longstanding feud between students from Gloster and Liberty sparked the situation.

3 businesses shuttering: Fernwood Truck Stop, Our Gang, Andrews Firestone closing

Three Pike County business that have each been in operation for more than 30 years have either closed their doors or will soon close.

The three businesses — the Fernwood Truck Stop, Andrews Firestone on South Broadway and Our Gang in the Edgewood Mall — represent a total of 113 years of business operation.

Amite schools taking stimulus funds

LIBERTY — The Amite County School District will receive $1.2 million in federal stimulus funds, and the school district will have to negotiate a maze of regulations to spend it, Superintendent of Schools Debbie Hopf said Thursday.

Hopf said the money is a combination of special education and other federal Title I funds.
