Mississippi fur-trapping, 1878-79

In November 1878, Pharaoh Thompson of Garden City, then in his 20s, set out on a fur-trapping venture along with his friend, the Rev. Elias George of Osyka, and three assistants.
They spent weeks floating, camping, trapping, hunting and fishing, first on the Homochitto River, then the Amite.

It all started with the Rattlesnake Master — no, not some Crocodile Dundee-style outdoors guy, but rather a weird plant growing at the edge of a food plot.
I’ve been noticing it for a few years now — nearly as tall as me, with stiff sharp leaves and round spiky flower heads.
