SMCC handles dorm issues

Southwest Mississippi Community College trustees agreed to advertise for construction bids to renovate the women’s dormitory and moved forward on a $2 million bond issue to build a new $6 million men’s dormitory.

The college intends to accept the lowest bid for the women’s dormitory, as long as it fits within the projected budget.

Officials hauled in 12 people on drug charges Monday and broke up an alleged Lawrence County distribution ring that authorities say a 22-year-old Monticello woman commanded.

“Several more arrests are coming,” Lawrence County Sheriff Joel Thames warned.

South Pike making changes; consolidating schools

The South Pike School District will have the same number of students at its schools next year, but will go from five to three campuses.

Upon a recommendation by Superintendent Estes Taplin Thursday, the school board voted 5-0 to consolidate four of their five campuses.

Parking gripes raised again

Chuck Paulk, owner of Cabin and Creek Real Estate in downtown McComb, appeared before the McComb city board Tuesday, the latest city parking policy critic.

Paulk is excited about city efforts to revitalize the downtown district, but he said he’s conidered moving to a location away from downtown with less parking scrutiny.
