Mississippi Department of Transportation officials are urging motorists to be more careful when they drive through work zones following the second on-the-job death of a worker in two months.

Contract worker Joseph A. Woodward Jr., 42, of Edwards died Tuesday after a car struck him on Highway 84 in Franklin County.

A burn ban took effect for Pike County on Tuesday as firefighters for a second day battled at least four blazes spurred by low humidity, high winds and dry conditions.

Randy Chapin of the Mississippi Forestry Commission said the commission approved the ban on Tuesday.

City delays vote on Jubilee Performing Arts Center lease
