Stocks wobbled to a mixed close on Wall Street following the latest update on inflation across the U.S.

The S&P 500 ended just barely higher Thursday after having been up as much as 1.3% earlier in the day. It was only the second gain in eight days for the benchmark index. The Dow added 52 points and the Nasdaq rose 0.1%.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Inflation in the United States edged up in July after 12 straight months of declines. But excluding volatile food and energy costs, so-called core inflation matched the smallest monthly rise in nearly two years, a sign that the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes have continued to slow price increases.

Stocks closed lower as Wall Street waited for a highly anticipated report on inflation that’s arriving the following day.

The S&P 500 lost 0.7% Wednesday, and has now dropped six of the last seven days. The Dow lost 191 points, or 0.5%, after flipping between gains and losses through the day. The Nasdaq composite fell 1.2%.
